Questions
Q.) What was the exact date of
birth of Nigel's daughter?
A.) Nigel's daughter, Olivia, was born on October 2,
1999.
Q.) Do you know when BUSH will
be touring in Australia?
A.) No, sorry, I do not know. BUSH will
be beginning a small European tour in
January and their U.S. tour in February-March 2000. As for the rest of
the world, including Australia of course, I really do not know, and I doubt
that BUSH themselves or their tour manager has made any set dates yet.
I could be wrong, though, so we'll just have to wait and see.
Q.) I heard Gavin was in bands
before BUSH. Besides Midnight, what was the other
one?
A.) Before Midnight, Gavin was in a band called The
Heroes.
Q.) Is there only one writer for
BUBBLES? Can I ever write for the 'zine?
A.) Technically, there is only one writer
for BUBBLES, which would be I (Reena).
However, I am always willing to have people write for the 'zine, whether
it
be articles, trivia, reader's poll, interviews, etc. If you are interested,
you can email
questions and suggestions to
BUBBLESzine@aol.com or visit
the
Reporters
page on the BUBBLES website.
Q.) Where did the taping of HBO's
Reverb on BUSH take place?
A.) At the Belly-Up Tavern in San Diego,
CA.
Q.) Where can I find the BUSH
song, "Homebody?"
A.) "Homebody" was on The Science of
Things enhanced single which was given out
at all Best Buylocations as a free gift for anyone who purchased the CD.
It's been said that some Best Buy stores still carry the enhanced single,
so you may
want to check there, check e-bay.com, or just ask around for it. It is a
great song!
Q.) In
BUSH's biography, The Twenty-Seventh Letter, the following quote is
in it:
"I've been waiting let me say/Been a strange 1000 days"
Where is it from?
A.) You got me there, I have no
idea! So, I went to Jennifer Nine, author of
the book, for the answer. Here is what she said:
"Well, there's a song called 'Ban The Bomb' that was done as one of
the potential songs
for The Science Of Things - it has Polly Styrene (who was in the
original
punk band X-Ray Spex) and Gwen Stefani singing on it. In the end,
though, they decided not to make the album overly long, so a few songs
had to be set aside to be used for B-sides or something in the future.
I
think it's a really good song and the lines you mention come from it -
and when I wrote that part of the book, where the quote just seemed
really appropriate, I didn't know it wasn't going to be included on
the
album. I hoped that it would be used as a B-side or something soon
enough that it wouldn't seem weird to have it there."
(Thank you, Jennifer!)

Opinions on The Science of Things and
some fast facts about the album.
Buy
TSOT
Opinions
Bubbleszine@aol.com
In my opinion, The Science of Things is the best Bush album of them
all. It would
have been easy and expected for the guys to create another Bush-rock album,
but
they went beyond making "just another Bush album." With the electronic
textures,
the sound is fresh, not to mention great. I love this album, and I'm
sure more
people will be turned on to Bush. They can't please everyone (like
those critics), but they sure pleased me!!
Gavingrrl96@webtv.net
The Science of Things, I think, brought back classic elements from
Sixteen Stone, while
adding some new different sound effects into it. The songs are like placed,
or
ordered, in such a good way that they all compliment each other. You've got
the hard, rock on type stuff in the begining, and it all slows down towards
the
end. I think that was cool about the album. All in all, all the songs are
good,
and if your weary of buying, don't worry, it's a good bet.
Gaviniover@aol.com
I LOVE IT!! I heard 7 out of the 12 songs on a radio preview, and I was dying
when I heard that. Words can not describe how good this album
is.
Pezgodess@aol.com
I don't think that Bush could have made a better album. Not only is
it a combination
of hints of Sixteen Stone and Razorblade Suitcase, there are
totally new elements, and [it]
shows how much the band has progressed over the past three years. The
electronics
add something different than the norm. All the songs are neat in their
own way.
I waited a looong time for this album (along with all us others), and
it was just what
my ears needed, and the best thing was that its from
Bush.
Srfreder@pittstate.edu
Bush has done it again, a album where all the songs are great! I
can listen to the
whole album, just like Sixteen Stone & Razorblade Suitcase!
The Science of Things is a
slight mix of SS & RS but it's very different too! The title of the new
album goes with the songs.
Tronat@magma.ca
I think that The Science of Things is the most amazing cd in the world!
All the songs are
so unbelievable, they are so perfect in every way. There is a song for every
way you
could feel. I bought in the very minute it came out and I am been obsessed
with it.
It couldn't be better, unless of course there were more songs. I love "Letting
the Cables Sleep"
it's so amazing. And "Altered States" it makes me so psyched! They all do!
After Sixteen Stone and Razorbalde Suitcase, I have been waiting
and waiting
and waiting for this! I can't even express how incomparable this
is!
Bushace@aol.com
In my opinion, Razorblade Suitcase is the best album ever made. It
is so emotionally
intense, it touched me like no other album ever has. While not as emotional,
The Science of Things is easily the best album of the year. It surpasses
even
Nine Inch Nails' masterpiece The Fragile. The layering and texture
of this album
are amazing, and while the lyrics are a little more straightfoward than Gavin's
usual
writing, they blow bands like STP and Live's out of the water. The album
begins
with "Warm Machine", a simply amazing song, and doesn't loose much steam
as it goes.
"Letting the Cables Sleep" ranks with "Distant Voices" and "Bonedriven" as
one of the
best songs ever made. All in all, you can do no wrong at all by picking it
up.
Username@mail.icongrp.com
I think that the new CD is completely awesome.
I think that in all
Bush songs, if you kinda tear them apart,
theres always some deeper meaning behind them and you really
get an inside look as to how Gavin feels about certain topics. The Science
of
Things has alot of great songs on it. I like the song "Spacetravel" and how
[BUSH] let Gwen sing back up cause she's got an awesome voice. My favorite
by
far would truly have to be "Letting the Cables Sleep," though. I mean
,
everyone has been in a situation like that where like someone means the
whole world to you and you feel like you're not getting that back in
return. It's a good song to listen to when you wanna do some thinking.
Bush
is just so diverse..a band has to be talented to pull that off.. and that
they are..
So I give the album two thumbs up.. you guys ROCK!!!

Facts
The Science of Things was completed in March of 1999.
The album was originally scheduled to be finished during
Christmas of 1998, but Gavin was not happy with it.
In fact, the rest of BUSH, particularly Nigel, were quite surprised
that while
in Ireland, Gavin had already written parts for the songs.
Because the album was delayed and because of a "breech of contract,"
Trauma
Records threatened to sue BUSH for $40,000,000.
One of the album's producers (Clive/Winstanley) actually stopped his
drinking
habit during the time span that The Science of Things was
recorded.
According to Gavin, "Jesus Online" is "this album's version of
'Swallowed.'"
- The 27th Letter
Gwen Stefani of No Doubt, Gavin's long-time girlfriend, appeared on
the record
as a backing vocalist on the song "Space travel." Gwen also sang on "Ban
the Bomb,"
but the song did not make the album.
Gavin's friend, Alexander Puttnam, also known as Sacha, is the
newest
addition to BUSH with keyboards, piano, strings, and backing vocals. He
used to be
in the band Midnight with Gavin.
The Science of Things was released on October 26, 1999. It
debuted at number
eleven on the Billboard Top 200 Albums.
An enhanced CD was released with the album at all Best Buy locations
on the
day of it's releasal. The disc included the exclusive tracks of
"Homebody"
and the "Letting the Cables Sleep" remix. Not to mention, when
inserted in a computer, the CD becomes a CD ROM.
In December of 1999, The Science of Things went gold in the
U.S.,
selling 500,000 copies.
Singles and videos from the album include "The Chemicals Between Us"
and "Letting the Cables Sleep." The next single is slated to be "Warm
Machine."

Finally, the lights went down. The guys started
with "Machinehead." I really
tried not to cry;cry because it was BUSH and cry because I was in pain! I
held back
the tears and just tried to have fun. Unfortunately, I could hardly see the
guys!
I was almost directly in front of Gavin (I got some pictures), but I could
not take being
suffocated. I did not want to crowd surf because a.) I hate crowd surfers
(it's not fun
when they kick you or are dropped on your head), b.) I don't want to kick
people
and be dropped on top of them and c.) I wanted to watch the show and the
pit was
to violent. So, I went back a few rows which was a little better. I skipped
around the
whole damn coliseum trying to get a good view. Unfortunately, right where
I was standing in front of Gavin, he crowdsurfed in that exact same spot!
I was
about three feet away so I did get some pictures. I do not know the order
of the
songs they played, but this is as close as I could get:
"Machinehead" "Disease of the Dancing Cats"
"Greedy Fly" "Warm Machine"
"Everything Zen" "Letting the Cables Sleep" "The Chemicals Between Us"
"Comedown" --- "Glycerine" "Swallowed" "Little Things"
Every song was incredible. However, I was so
surprised that the crowd didn't
know the words to the majority of
the songs played from The Science
of Things. After "Letting the Cables
Sleep," I started to chant "'Alien!' Play
'Alien!" and all of these other people
started to do the same as well!
Sadly, they didn't play it.
Gavin went crowd surfing once
and during"Comedown," he went into
the part of the crowd who were seated
and played a little there. All of the guys
seemed to be having a great time! Dave
was smiling a lot and Nigel was jumping up
and down with his guitar, not to mention
Gavin was doing the same. Robin
played his drums (his drumset had
the background art from the "English Fire" in the CD booklet- very
cool)
while standing up during "Little Things." During "Swallowed," from the part
"just wanted to be myself" to "you're the wave," the crowd was singing along-
it was wicked cool. After the song, Gavin was telling us what wonderful singers
we were and how he thinks it's so cool when the crowd sings along. The guys
ended
with "Little Things" as usual, and Gavin added his "I was born in this
town...
putting out the fire with kerosene" and "stone cold" bit. I have to say,
I was looking
around, and everyone was confused as to what he was saying. The whole crowd
was there to see BUSH, but I don't think that there were many hardcore
fans.
Indianapolis is not that big, anywho. Surprisingly, Gavin did not take his
shirt
off (it was a long sleeved light blue one and he was sweating a lot). All
in all, the
concert was amazing, but didn't quite add up to the Roseland show in NYC.
But at least
I knew the lyrics to the new songs at this show. I didn't die, which was
good, but
my homemade BUSH tanktop (a black one with silver rhinestone that spell "b
u s h")
lost a few rhinestones and my chest was bruised along with a few other
places.
Afterwards, I went over to the t-shirt stand.
They had three BUSH shirts: the
chemicals one from the Roseland show, the new Gavin t-shirt (black and red)
and the one I got (after searching everywhere for a fucking size medium)
which was black and on the front, it had the "Disease of the Dancing Cats"
logo
on it from The Science of Things liner notes and it says "BUSH" on the front
really
small and on the back in blue writing, it says "BUSH The Science of
Things."

So at this point is where the night takes a turn for the better. I
was going to the
bathroom and there is a guy giving out copies of TSOT. So I run over there
a grab when. I was so lucky because he only had 3 left.
I couldn't believe I got a copy a week early.
When I leave I go around back. I see their limo back there and
people
packing their instruments. I saw Gavin's guitar with all the ripped strings
so I knew it was their stuff. I knew I wouldn't be a long wait since there
was surely no after show party. So fifteen minute later I see Gavin come
out followed by Dave, Nigel than robin. They all hop in the limo. But Gavin
comes back out of the limo, stands on the door sill and puts his arms over
the roof to sign autographs. Than I hoped over the barricades, run around
the limo to the trunk on the side where Gavin was. So I was inches from
him.
I was trying to grab him but the damm guards kept pushing my hand away.
So I kept holding the CD in front of his face until he signed it. So he grabbed
the CD form me, signed it and gave it back, but I was holding onto the CD
the entire time. He was really nice and was happy to be there. Then he
gets in the limo after about five minutes and drives off. But as they were
driving off, Gavin rolls down the window and waves and says
good bye. I still can't believe I finally got to meet!!!!

Interpretations
"Homebody"
Written by Gavin Rossdale.
Interpreted by Reena.
Lyrics
First of all, a "homebody" is a person who is mainly interested
in homey type things, such as family. It seems that Gavin is trying
to
portray a person, or maybe even himself, as someone who is
awaiting the arrival of his lover whom he hasn't seen in a long amount of
time.
He is very much anticipating her arrival ("All of the while/
You never stop/You're the traffic in my brain"), because she is constantly
on
his mind.
However, because she is always away, she doesn't know what
he is thinking. ("There's no way for you to see/
When you feel that far away from me.) He doesn't like
the fact of them being so far away from each other.
On the other hand, Gavin could be trying to share this in a
figurative
sense, meaning that they might not be far away
in distance as in miles, but in lack of communication. ("This is not how
we should be/
How come you feel so far from me?)
Unfortunately, he can do very little about
the situation. ("Waiting for you is all I can do"). Because
they two people are a couple, they cannot solve their distance problem
individually. They must communicate in order to to come up with a
solution.

Cyclefly is a band who opened for BUSH on July 22, 1999
at the Roseland Ballroom in
New York City. They played at Woodstock the next
night and from there have become better
known, especially in the BUSH
community. In January, Cyclefly will be opening for BUSH in
Europe. I enjoyed the band so much, so I was
able to get some questions answered by the
lead singer, Declan O'Shea.
Special thank you to Claudine. Check out next issue's interview
with journalist and author of BUSH's biography,
The Twenty-Seventh Letter, Jennifer Nine!
BUBBLES: How and when did you meet?
CYCLEFLY: We met in Cork [Ireland in 1995]. I
was playing in pubs; I met NoNo, Christian
and
Jean Michel, who were in Ireland playing in a band called Seventeen. I then
moved to France
to work at EuroDisney as a carpenter with Ciaran, my brother. Meanwhile Seventeen
split, and the lads contacted my mother, who then rang France. Ciaran went
back and
met the lands and jammed with them. He then said it was cool, so I came
back and Cyclefly started.
BUBBLES: Where did the band name and CD title come from?
CYCLEFLY: The band name came from a painting [Declan] did in acrylics
of a figure. The
CD title came from a song named "Generation Sap."
BUBBLES: How would you describe your sound, in your own
words?
CYCLEFLY: Hard to say- listening to yourself is quite weird
sometimes!
BUBBLES: Who are your influences/Who do you enjoy listening
to?
CYCLEFLY: Bowie is my favourite, but I like a lot of different stuff:
Kyass, Beatles,
Lennon, Jane's Addiction, Smashing Pumpkins.
BUBBLES: Declan, are you a natural redhead?
CYCLEFLY: Of course I am.
BUBBLES: How did you get your gig with
BUSH at
the Roseland Ballroom
[July 22, 1999; New York City]?
CYCLEFLY: The general manager of our record company,
Brendan, got it through their agent.
BUBBLES: What do you think of BUSH?
CYCLEFLY: We love to tour with BUSH. They're a great band; they
are the only band that we have played with that
we all know their material.
BUBBLES: Do you have any plans for a U.S.
tour?
CYCLEFLY: October we [toured] with Live in America for a
month...
BUBBLES: How was Woodstock?
CYCLEFLY: It was cool at Woodstock. We met Perry Farrell which was
cool.
BUBBLES: How do you feel about the comment from Kerrang!
magazine
comparing the band to a pink-flavoured Marilyn Manson?
CYCLEFLY: Yes, it's great, but I don't think I look like Marilyn
Manson.
BUBBLES: Do you know which song will be the
next single from Generation Sap?
CYCLEFLY: No, not yet, but maybe "Better Than You."
