-Bush is in the latest issue of Nylon magazine.

10.22.01

-An article about Bush from NYpost.com...
October 21, 2001 -- A new album from hard-edged, alt-rock band Bush features artwork that had to be changed because of the terrorist atrocities.
The cover of "Golden State," which hits stores Tuesday and is the band's follow-up to 1999's "The Science of Things," originally was "a plane in a silhouette," says singer-songwriter Gavin Rossdale.
"It was a beautiful cover. But now what was an instrument of change, travel, and motion has now become an instrument of death. So we couldn't use that."
The group, which formed when its members attended art school together, opted for a simple gold cover with no graphics other than the band's name and album title.
The events of Sept. 11 also mandated that the group alter the title of its "Speed Kills" single to the friendlier "The People That We Love."
Another of Bush's dark tracks, "Headful of Ghosts," may undergo some tinkering. The song features the line, "I'm at my best when I'm terrorist inside."
"I don't think I can sing that now," Rossdale says. "It just doesn't work. The song is much more important than one line of poetry taken the wrong way."
Rossdale says he will change the line when the band performs the song live and is considering re-recording it with a new line for future pressings of the album.
"This is an extreme situation," he says. Bush, creators of such hits as "Everything Zen" and "The Chemistry Between Us," is no stranger to controversy.
On the band's last album, the artwork for the song "English Fire" riled mega store Wal-Mart.
"Wal-Mart said you couldn't stock any artwork showing nipples," Rossdale recalls. "You can buy guns from Wal-Mart, right? And they wouldn't have that."
"That was censorship that I thought was completely inappropriate and totally hysterical."
And what about the current changes the band has made?
"This I don't see it as censorship," he says. "I see it as sensitivity."

DEBT OF HONOUR

In becoming a rock star Gavin Rossdale beat the odds. Now he's hoping Africa can do the same

By Polly Williams
Photographed by Dennis Morris

In Tanzania, he's "Mr Gavin, an esteemed singer," a famous stranger. In Britain, he's "big-in-America-isn't-he?" In America, Gavin Rossdale is a rock god and, with girlfriend Gwen Stefani (lead singer of No Doubt), part of rock's Grammy power-couple. And today, the 33-year-old lead singer of Bush is in a stuffy studio in Camden Town, unknotting a matted dreadlock belonging to his Hungarian sheepdog, Winston, and talking about how he ended up being all these things.
First, the esteemed man of Africa: last year, the singer spent 10 days in Tanzania for Drop the Debt, a charity that campaigns to cancel the unpayable debt of the world's poorest countries. And, as the campaigners hoped, he has the first-hand witness's zeal to prove it. "These people really live in a state of abject poverty," insists Rossdale. "You have to live with a massive amount of denial day to day, otherwise it's so draining. Sometimes it's hard to turn your back." He still sends the village kids crates of footballs.
Next, the "Famous-in-America" guy: founded in the early Nineties, Bush were dismissed as grunge-lite by a British music press seduced by the cute pop ironies of bands such as Pulp, Suede and Blur. They went on to sell 15 million records worldwide, becoming one of the biggest rock bands in the US, a market that the aforementioned Brit bands haven't even dented. Still, things have moved on since 1995, when Bush played to a crowd of 60,000 in Washington DC, then 150 people in a Birmingham pub a month later. They are now Britain's grudgingly sung rock heroes. "It's taken about five years for people to stop being irritated that we've done good elsewhere," says Rossdale.
It all makes for an unusual combination -- the charity and his tanned hand, heavy with chunky, silver jewellery. Truthfully, the image of Rossdale bitten by mosquitoes, Pumas squidging from dusty factory to dank hospital, is not easily conjured up unless envisioned as a particularly rugged album cover. After all, crippled by a spiral of unpayable foreign debts and with Aids ravaging its community, Tanzania is no place for a celebrity safari. And, while there were uplifting moments -- playing football with the boys ("it's a common language"), a new birth on the maternity ward -- what Rossdale largely saw was a country on its knees. In one children's hospital, he inadvertently witnessed the death of a two-year-old child, a death preventable with medicine. "That's about as poignant as it gets," Rossdale says quietly. "Yeah, that was pretty bad."
But it's precisely this sensitivity that has been instrumental in Bush's success. Rossdale's lyrics tap into the post-Nirvana generation's navel: death, broken relationships, hapless urban loneliness. He once half jokingly commented of his parents' split (his mother left when he was 11): "I've never sat down and cried about it.  I've just made a career out of it." To his female fans, Rossdale is the  soul of a poet trapped in the body of a pin-up.
Still, Rossdale's ranking in the celebrity alphabet is curiously dependent on geographical location. He and Gwen divide their time equally between LA, her home town ("unfortunately") and London, "my people, my world." While in London, he may have the swanky Georgian house in the celestial hood of Primrose Hill, but he can still wander out without getting flash-bulbed by paparazzi. And though the lack of recognition may be slightly irksome, he's not "tabloid fodder, which is a great relief." Fact is, Britain is really a mini-break from America's A list. Although Rossdale says, in LA, "everyone is trained not to stare or care. But that perma-tan hides a mountain of emotions... Deep down, they are tap dancing with excitement." They would implode if Rossdale married Gwen. Will it happen? "I imagine that's definitely possible," says Rossdale coyly. "But [talking about it] does detract from the romance. I am just keeping schtum."
So life is sweet. He's got the girl and he's got the money. Serious money. As Bush's songwriter, Rossdale's wealth makes other British celebrity piles look like loose change. Which brings us back to the first, less sweet, thing: did he ever feel guilty surrounded by Tanzanian poverty "Not in the slightest. I can't be responsible for all those circumstances, but I can for my own. I am self-made. I spent most of my life not being able to pay the rent. We were always outsiders -- doing rock music when no one cared about it -- so there was never a financial incentive," he says. The insistent idealism that turned a group of untrendy musicians into one of the world's most successful rock bands is still very much alive in Rossdale. And it's not unrelated to the idealism that tempted him temporarily into the genuine grunge of Africa.
"After Live Aid, well... perhaps you get used to things. It gets harder and harder to be politicised," he says thoughtfully. "But you need to be. This is political in that it's about governments, who owes, who lends, and government corruption, but the incentive behind Drop the Debt is purely humanitarian."
Rather endearingly, Rossdale admits it was a "great relief" to return home. While remarkably unaffected by his success, the Tanzanian trip has reinforced his appreciation of it, from his art (he's got an impressive collection that includes a few Francis Bacons) to his new car, a Range Rover. "I've never been covetous. But I now understand what all the fuss is about. It makes you feel great!" Besides, he says, "I'm really lucky. I have people around me that I love..." and then he grins impishly, "...and I've got sandwiches for life." His many lives, in fact.

Here is an excerpt of the article inside from the Kerrang! website:

BUSH: In the bedroom of a plush house by London's Primrose Hill, Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale treated Kerrang! to an exclusive playback of his band's new record. It's their most important album yet. It's also their best.
Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale talks about the weight of responsibility on his shoulders, during a candid interview in this week's Kerrang! cover story (in shops on Wednesday, August 8). Talking to K! editor Paul Rees in his palatial home in London's Primrose Hill - that's Gavin's house, not Paul's - Rossdale confesses: "Sometimes I do feel like the point person. At the moment I'm spending four hours a day dealing with the new album artwork, but no-one really comes round to help. The others pop in now and again to go yes or no - often no - and then everyone leaves". The new album in question is 'Solutions', the band's fourth. It will be released in October.
-Gavin is pictured in the newest issue of CosmoGirl magazine with Freddie Prinze Jr on the cover.

Bush Kicks Off Golden State With Blistering Roxy Set In Los Angeles
Oct 23, 2001, 11:20 am PT
Bush celebrated its return-to-form record, the just-released Golden State (due Tuesday [Oct. 23] on Atlantic), with a blistering 16-song set at the Roxy in Los Angeles on Monday (Oct. 22).
As celebrities and VIPs mingled on the side (see Miss Truth) at the KROQ-sponsored show, Bush launched into "Fugitive," one of the seven tracks debuted from Golden State, to kick off the festivities. Although the mix was off (too much drums, not enough bass, not enough Gavin Rossdale) and never was set quite right throughout the show, the grinding guitars that mark the song's intro suffered little and pelted the sold-out crowd of 500.
Sandwiched between "Machinehead" and the new "Solutions" came a slightly less digital "The Chemicals Between Us." The song worked well between the flag-waving choruses of Bush's more muscular rock anthems despite representing the album (The Science of Things) that saw Bush tinker too much in electronics to its least-successful end.
Rossdale thankfully kept political commentary to a minimum throughout the show, touching on the current military actions of the United States only once during "Everything Zen": "England and America join forces -- what do you think of that?"
A beautiful "Letting the Cables Sleep," "Reasons" (one of the few tracks on Golden State where Bush dabbles in computerized wizardry), and a scorching "My Engine Is With You" -- the most punk rock track the band has ever recorded -- followed, Rossdale sarcastically introduced the song as "another ballad for you," which isn't entirely off base as the sentimental lyrics of the song don't exactly match its fiery battlement of guitars.
"Come Down" closed the main set before the band returned for a version of "Glycerine" that seemed normal at first, but then exploded into a brash rock track by its end. "Headful of Ghosts" followed, which, of the new tracks, broke out most notably from its recorded version. And kudos to Rossdale for sticking to his artistic guns by singing the song's now-touchy line, "I'm at my best when I'm terrorist inside," which not a week ago he had said he didn't think he could ever sing again in light of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Rossdale shed his guitar, an odd and rare sight, for the evening's finale of "Little Things." All hell broke loose as the charismatic singer began inviting the crowd onstage, quickly swelling it to capacity leaving bassist Dave Parsons no choice but to hop on top of monitors to continue playing while Rossdale, shirt-pulled and smothered, made his way off stage-right with the help of security and fans. It was quite the rock and roll moment, and couldn't help but symbolize Bush's return to its grunge-crunching guitar rock roots represented by Golden State.
Bush next plays Las Vegas on Thursday (Oct. 25), New Orleans on Saturday (Oct. 27) and Mt. Clemens, Mich., on Halloween before returning to its homeland for a European tour through December.
Bush set list:
1. "Fugitive"
2. "Machinehead"
3. "The Chemicals Between Us"
4. "Solutions"
5. "The People That We Love"
6. "Everything Zen"
7. "Superman"
8. "Greedy Fly"
9. "Letting the Cables Sleep"
10. "Reasons"
11. "My Engine Is With You"
12. "Come Down"
Encore:
13. "Glycerine"
14. "Headful of Ghosts"
15. "Swallowed"
16. "Little Things"
(Kevin Raub)
-Bush mentioned in "Miss Truth:"
<The stars were out in hordes for Monday's (Oct. 22) sold-out club performance by Bush at the Roxy in Los Angeles (see review in news), with singer Gavin Rossdale's girlfriend, No Doubt's Gwen Stefani, leading the way.
At times Stefani sang along ("The People That We Love"), looked incredibly bored ("Come Down"), and was quite animated ("Swallowed") (Come on, wouldn't you be too?). Brad Pitt, Jennifer Aniston, David Arquette, and Courteney Cox also held court at a table nearby throughout the show. >

09.20.01

-Due to recent terrorist attacks in New York City, out of respect for those lost and affected by the tragedy, Bush has changed the name of their current single, "speed kills," to "The People That We Love."  Also, a line in "Head Full of Ghosts" contained the word "terrorist," which will also be changed (read article).  Here is Bush's official statement:
"We in Bush are shocked and deeply saddened by the horrific events of last week. In light of this and with the sensitivity we feel towards those whose lives have been forever affected, we have decided to rename our current single 'The People That We Love.'
Since the song is one of love, appreciation, and rising against adversity, we hope that this change will reflect our desire to be part of the soothing that art brings at these times.
We are extremely grateful for the support which the radio community has already given our new music, and our hearts go out to our many American friends during this extremely difficult time.  Let the music heal."

09.15.01

-Due to the tragic events that took place in New York City and Washington D.C. this week, Bush has decided to change the cover art for their upcoming album, Golden State, feeling that it is inappropriate for the time being.

-New article from the Q magazine website (thanks Sandra!):

New LP From Bush
4th Album Ready For October
Bush return with a new album, Golden State, on 22 October.   It’s the fourth studio album from the Brit quartet, and their first since signing to Atlantic Records in April this year.
As one of the few British bands to conquer the American market in the last decade, Bush are hoping to crack their home country with an album they describe as "a real rock record".
"The album is very empowering and uplifting, though I’m not really sure what its contemporaries are. That’s the weird thing about it. It’s like the record exists in its own space," says front man Gavin Rossdale.
Showcasing 12 tracks all written by Rossdale, Golden State is produced by Dave Sardy (Marilyn Manson, Systems Of A Down) and engineered by Gregg Fidelman (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Weezer) and features the forthcoming single Speed Kills, which is released on 8 October. A full track-listing is yet to be announced but the album will contain Solutions, My Engine Is With You, Out Of This World and Headful Of Ghosts.

Inspiration and video for "speed kills"
Each year, more than 41,000 people are killed in automobile accidents in the United States, and experts agree that motorists driving too darn fast cause many of these fatalities.
That was just one of the things on Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale's mind when he wrote "Speed Kills," the first single from the band's new album, Golden State, which comes out October 23.
Rossdale admitted that he rarely focuses on only one thing at a time. "Often it's really hard to explain what I've written because of that," he said over the phone from his London home. "Sometimes there are so many ideas in there, I can't even understand it fully myself. At least it's honest."
Addressing velocity termination from different vantage points, the song is an insistent stormer that layers screechy guitar harmonics over blasting power chords and contrasts bass-dominated verses with distortion-drenched choruses.
"I was watching D.A. Pennebaker's amazing documentary 'The War Room,' which is about the Clinton/Gore campaign battling George Bush," Rossdale said. "On the back of their shirts they had the slogan 'speed kills.' I just loved the idea of killing with the speed of thought. Not just traffic. I like the idea of being powerfully whippetlike with your brain."
Somewhere in the writing process, Rossdale shifted focus from politics to personal issues. He thought of friends who were single parents and his sister, who disappeared in Southeast Asia for months before resurfacing.
"There's this collage of family stuff and relationship moments," he continued. "One line goes, 'Can you tell she's coming up roses, can you tell she's coming up sweet.' That's about kids who are raised by single parents and the other parent doesn't even know his or her child."
Since "Speed Kills" confronts the listener from a variety of angles, it's understandable that Rossdale decided not to commission a narrative video for the song. Bush hired Canada-based video director Ulf Buddensieck, who, though widely respected, has primarily shot undiscovered bands such as Chevelle and Big Wreck and local bands such as Finger Eleven and Moist.
"He came up with a treatment that was exactly what I was looking for," Rossdale explained. "It was as if I wrote a list and ticked off boxes. He wanted to do something that was edgy and vibrant and alive, and that's exactly what I wanted. Too many videos today are just too dark and moody. They all look like they were shot in a garage. We wanted to be unmoody and undark."
The band shot the "Speed Kills" video last month in a large studio just up the road from Rossdale's London house. While the footage will feature computer animation and unconventional camera work, it will be strictly a performance video.
"I just wanted to use the visuals to emphasize the song," said Rossdale. "I haven't seen that many other bands use the same approach, so I thought it was interesting."

-From MTV.COM:
Bush Get Hooky Again On New Album

The Band is currently recording the follow-up to The Science of Things; new LP due in October.
Don't expect any tricks, bleeps and blips, prog rock or conceptual bombast on Bush's new album.
"The band's goal going into the record was to capture the great performances of the band playing," said David Sardy, who is producing the as-yet-untitled LP. "It's not about studio trickery. It doesn't have loops or electronics, it's just the band rocking out."
Bush have recorded 17 tracks, though Sardy expects only 15 to get finished and 11 or 12 to make the album. Song titles are still tentative.
The album, the follow-up to 1999's The Science of Things and Bush's first on Atlantic Records, is due in October, singer Gavin Rossdale said at the MTV Movie Awards last weekend.
Sardy (Marilyn Manson, Red Hot Chili Peppers) recorded most of the songs with the band in London, though they are currently in Los Angeles "screwing around and fixing stuff."
"It's nice because we started before they signed their new deal, so there hasn't been a rush and we've had that all the way through," Sardy said. "The Manson album [Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death)] took 10 months, so this doesn't seem long."
Rossdale's lyrics are dark on some songs, but mostly uplifting throughout the album, Sardy said.
"He's in a good place in his life emotionally, which is good for writing music," the producer said. "His songs are incredibly hooky. Even when I heard the demos, it was like 'F---. You can't get them out of your head!' "
Sardy, who runs his own indie label, SeeThru Broadcasting, said Bush spent several weeks in pre-production jamming and working on song arrangements.
"I don't know if it's going back or just getting to the root of what it is that they enjoy doing," Sardy said. "It was all about performances and great songs."
