BUSH and Moby
MTV Campus Invasion Tour
April 4, 2000
Oxford, OH
John D. MIllet Hall
This was my fourth BUSH concert and it was truly the best and most exciting night of my life. Here's how the story goes:
My friend, Erin, and I arrived at the Millet Hall in Oxford, OH at 5:15 PM. We tried to get inside the venue, but no luck there. We went around to where the tourbusses were located. There were four of them, one of which I believed to belong to Moby. I soon found out it was when I saw him walk inside of it. We waited around and then asked where BUSH was: doing an interview with a radio station, they said. All of a sudden, two cars drive by slowly. The second one contained a smiling Gavin, who turned around in the backseat, looking though the rearview window to get a glimpse of us, and waving. The two cars stopped by the backstage door. I didn't see Dave and Robin, because they had rushed inside. I headed over to Gavin first, because he was closest to me. I walked over to where he was, surrounded by girls (and some guys). I said, "Hi Gavin!" and handed him a gift bag (filled with musician books to write music and includes quotes of inspiration). He seemed surprised, and gave me his huge, renowed smile and said "Oh, thank you!" He signed my The Science of Things CD booklet, and I somewhat got a picture with him. I was so nervous and was shaking badly, almost about to cry. Instead, I went over to Nigel. I said hello and gave him his birthday card. He said thank you and smiled. I asked him if he had heard of an online BUSH 'zine called Bubbles. He said yes of course and asked me if it was my 'zine. I said yes, and he smiled and was like "Oh!" He signed my CD cover, and I got a picture taken with him. So sweet and polite! The body/security guard (not Bone, I actually never saw him that night) made the guys go inside. This whole time, Sacha was filiming us! I looked into the camera and said something along the lines of "hey, BUSH rocks! Hi Sacha!" Everyone had left except for Erin, two girls, and I. Sacha came over to talk to us. I asked him to sign my CD booklet, as well. He said, "why of course, my lovely." lol. He drew a staff of music and signed his name. His nails were painted black and in gold, they spelled "BUSH." I told him that I loved his nails. He said thanks and explained them by saying how he got bored on the bus, and all the guys think he's crazy. As everyone knows, his hair is a very bright red. We talked for quite a long time, he's very charming. I got a picture with him, and hugs and kisses. Before he left, Robin walked outside! I said "Robin!" He smiled and waved and came over to us. I asked if he received my presents, and he said he had not been in the dressing room yet. I got his autograph and a picture with him. He said that Ruby Rose (his daughter) is doing fine after I had asked. Robin was nice, but he seemed a bit down...
Anyway, we said good-bye to Robin, who went to the tourbusses, and Sacha went inside to get food. After everyone was gone, the security guard kicked us out. At that moment, I was the happiest girl in the world!
Erin and I then went across the street to get something to eat at the campus cafe. I was so nervous and happy, I could hardly eat. At 6:30 PM, we went back to the venue to pick up our tickets from will call. I then saw Jaycie who signed up for the Bubbles Meet-Up. Our tickets were in the seventh row, right next to them. But Erin and I went back behind the venue for another peak to see if BUSH was there. Instead, we discovered another security guard. So, we went back inside...We waited for Meera and Mary, but didn't seem them and so went inside. Luckily, the security didn't check our bags, not to mention my coat, yay! (I had two cameras.) They had loads of stuff on sale, including a poster, many shirts, stickers, hats, etc. I bought the black and white BUSH baseball shirt. It's a size medium, but huge!! Oh well=).
We went in, got a green wristband for floor seats), I met Johanna (Bubbles Meet Up) and talked for a bit, and found our seats next to Jaycie and other amBUSH members. I saw the two girls from earlier, and they had VIP passes from someone! They couldn't go backstage though, because they had to be escorted by someone with a crew pass. So, one of the guys from BUSH's crew passed by and let them in. Of course, we followed them. One of the security guards was like "where do you think you're going," but the crew guy let me in....I made it backstage!!!!! It was really dark and only a few people were around. We saw Moby, so we went to go talk to him. He's so nice!! He was wearing a white shirt that said "Listen to Black Sabaath." I asked him to sign my Play CD cover, and he drew on it and signed it. Then, all of a sudden, the lights went down, and the opening music for Moby went on. He was about to get onstage, and one of the guards was escorting us out (damnit! Where was BUSH?!). So, we took our seats.
Moby rocked!! The show was so good, and boy does that man like to jump and play the bongos...and he has a bit of an infatuation with glow sticks, lol, and when he was playing a cover, he told us to pretend it was 1973 and he wished he had hair... He's so hilarious, and the music rocked! They played loads of songs, including "Body Rock," "Natural Blues," etc.
After Moby, I heard someone yell my name..it was Meera! So we met up with her and her friend Mary, and went to the front row. These two girls were bitching at us, saying "you shouldn't be here. You're not in the first row, I saw you come from the second row. That's really shitty." (We didn't come from the second row, stupid.) And she gave me an evil look. I know it was wrong, but at least I wasn't the one screaming "Gavin!!" Oh well. The security guards starting asking to see tickets for the front row, and those damn girls were telling them that some people didn't belong, pointing to us and Meera and Mary. Luckily, they didn't bug us to leave really, but poor Meera and Mary had to go (stupid girls!). The bad thing about front row is that you can't take pictures (but we took a few anyway....very sneeky=).
Lights off. Screams. Hearts pounding.
BUSH took the stage! The guys started off with "Machinehead." For all who care, here is what the guys were wearing: Nigel- a white shirt. Gavin- a white jacket, took it off and had a white shirt and jeans. Dave- a grey shirt and black pants. Robin- no shirt. Sacha- green shirt. Anywho, here is what the guys played (I will know the actual order later):
Machinehead
Personal Holloway
Disease of the Dancing Cats
Greedy Fly
Altered States
Mindchanger
Everything Zen
Mouth
Letting the Cables Sleep
Warm Machine
The Chemicals Between Us
Comedown
___
Glycerine (rock version)
Swallowed
Break on Through
Little Things
During "Everything Zen," Gavin went all around the venue with his guitar, getting attacked by the crowd! Nigel had to finish the song for him, lol. I was really really surprised the guys played "Altered States" and especially "Mindchanger!" I love that song! Meera and I were freaking out a bit, lol. And during "Little Things," Gavin went back in the crowd and was singing, no guitar attached, of course. They played so so so well!! Nigel recognized me and smiled a few times. Gavin and Dave saw me, too. What a cool feeling! I had a BUSH flag draped over the barrier in front of me, so they can't miss me, lol. I found out that this show is going to be webcasted on MTV online next week!!! (Thank you camera man for the info.) It was a brilliant show, and the crowd was wild the whole time. They never cease to amaze me!
So, after the show, we hung around by the tourbusses for an hour and a half till the guys came out. I talked to Sacha first, because he came over to me. We talked for a little bit, and then I went over to Gavin. He recognized me and smiled, and thanked me for the books. I got my amBUSH passport taken, and he was smiling a lot, seemed to be in a great mood. While he was signing everyone's stuff, I just kept looking up at him in awe and disbelief...I then got my picture taken with him. He's so cool.
I then saw Dave from far away, and I grabbed Erin and we walked over to Dave. I was really excited to meet him, because he was the only one I hadn't met yet. We said hello, and while he was signing my CD, I asked him if he received the book. He looked at me and said something like "oh that was you! Thank you, they are lovely books!" and something like he'd be sure to use it, etc. I also got a picture with him. He's so adorable! Nigel was next to Dave, so I went and said hello. I asked if he saw me, which he did, and then he asked me if I enjoyed the show. Of course, I said I loved it and it was the best one to date (better than Roseland in NYC). And I told him I'd be sure to send Bubbles!
I turned around, and there was Robin again! I said hello, and Erin got a picture with him. I think we were the last ones he talked to before getting back on the bus. He seemed happier than before, but pretty quiet. I felt bad for him, and it's just my nature to ask what's wrong, but of course it's none of my business, so I didn't ask of course. I thanked Robin, told him the show rocked, and he said thanks, waved, smiled, and said good-bye.
Erin wanted to get a picture with Gavin (I felt bad, I didn't want to annoy him!). So, we went back and she got a picture with him. Then we headed back over to Sacha and talked to him for a while. He was holding my hand while I was speaking to him and asking me to go to the Bowling Green show..he was like "you must go! we're going to be so good, you have to go!" I told him it was sold out and he said to just go anyway, and that he would have passes and tickets for me. This girl (me) has yet to find out if she goes. But that could be and hopefully will be a whole other story...
I said good-bye to Sacha and left. I was so excited about the whole experience, that when I got in the car, I realized my hands were frozen! But it's all for BUSH!
WHAT A NIGHT. This was the best of my life. I would give anything, ANYTHING to do it again. I can barely move my neck from swaying my head around, my legs hurt, my voice is nearly gone, and I've still got the lime green bracelet around my wrist, reminding me of that night. What a night!!!
